Yvette Cooper Bio

Yvette Cooper is a popular British politician. Since 2021, she has been serving as Shadow Home Secretary. Formerly from 2011 to 2015, she worked in the same position of Shadow Home Secretary. She served as a member of the Labour Party as a Member of Parliament for Nor man ton Ponte fr act and Castleford.

Early life and Education

She was born on 20 March 1969, Inverness, Scotland. Presently she is 52 years old. She is the daughter of Tony Cooper and June. Her father has previously worked as General Secretary of the Prospect trade union, a non-executive director of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, and a Chairman of the British Nuclear Industry Forum. Formerly he also served as a government adviser on the Energy Advisory Panel. Her mother was a teacher of Maths.

She completed her schooling at Eggar’s School which is a comprehensive school situated in Holybourne. Further, she studied at Alton College in Alton Hampshire. At Balliol College, Oxford she studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics and passed with a first-class honors degree. In 1991, when she was studying at Harvard University, she was awarded the Kennedy Scholarship. From the London School of Economics, she completed her Post graduation with an MSc in Economics.

Political career

From 2008 to 2010, she served as Chief Secretary to the Treasury in the cabinet, and from 2010 to 2011 she became Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. She served as Minister of State for Housing and Planning under the government of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

In 2011, when her husband Ed Balls was promoted to Shadow Chancellor of the  Exchequer, she replaced Balls as Shadow Home Secretary and served in the Parliament until the Labour party lost the election of 2015.

In 2015, she announced that she would run to be Leader of the Labour Party in the leadership election but after losing she subsequently resigned as Shadow Home Secretary in September 2015.

Then from 2016 to 2021, she served as the Chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee. In 2021, she became Shadow Home Secretary again in Keir Star mer’ s reshuffle.

Personal life

On 10 January 1998, she got married to Ed Balls. Her husband was also a member of the Lab our Party and the Co-operative Party and a Member of Parliament for Nor manton. They have three children, two daughters- Ellie and Maddie, and one son Joel.

In November 2019, her first book named ‘ She Speaks: The power of Women’s Voices’ got published. Then in October 2020, she published another book entitled ‘ She Speaks: Women’s Speeches That Changed the World, from Pankhurst

to Greta’.
