Susheela Gopalan: Indian Politician, Kerala Legislature

Su sheela Gopalan was an Indian politician. She was born in 1929 at the home of Shri. Velu kutty Thandan at Muhamma, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Kerala. She was an Indian communist leader who founded the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Su sheela became MLA in the Government of India three times. Susheela was born to a very famous family called Kalari in Muhamma. She completed her education in Alappuzha and Trivandrum. Thereafter, she joined the Communist Party and married AK Gopalan in the year 1952. She met him while she was hiding due to some reason. AK Gopalan was also a party member.

Susheela: Women Who Help Responsibilities of CPI

Susheela was one of the main women who held the major roles and responsibilities of the CPI structure. She served as a Minister in LDF cabinets in Kerala. During the last innings in politics, she was the Minister of industries and Social Welfare. She was elected against EK Nayanar for the Chief Ministership of CPI but lost and became the Minister for Industries and Social Welfare.

The Flagbarrior of Students’ Movements

In 1948m Susheela joined the Communist Party and was quite active in student movements. She took steps against the Diwan of Travancore with the students in 1947 and was expelled from college because of political activities. To complete her BA Course, she had to study in four different colleges.

She was even jailed for 16 months during the Emergency period. She was detained for one week.

Susheela Gopalan: Political Career in Different Constituency

Before becoming an MLA, she was elected to Lok Sabha in 1967, 1980, and 1991. She became a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Amendment to Dowry Prohibition Act in 1961.

  1. In 1981-1984, she became a Member of the Joint Select Committee on Amendment to the Code of Criminal Procedure.
  2. In 1996, she was elected to KLA as a CPI candidate and became Minister for Industries.
  3. Su sheela Gopalan: Arts and Literary Activities
  4. Apart from politics, Su sheela was fond of books. She translated the book named “ The Golden Flower”. It was written in English. She translated it into Malayalam.
  5. She was the Chairperson of the Kerala Circle Co-ordination Committee and a member of the Industries Standing Committee from 1992-95.
