Jane Elizabeth Kennedy, better known as Jane Kennedy, is a British politician and also an inaugural Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner. She has been a member of the Independent political party since 2019. Before this, she was a member of the Labour Party until 2019. She served as Member of Parliament for Liverpool Wavertree which was formerly known as Liverpool Broadgreen from 1992 until 2010.
Early life and Education
She was born Jane Elizabeth Hodgson, on 14 May 1958 in Whitehaven, Cumberland, England. Currently, she is 63 years old as of 2021.
She completed her early education at Haughton Comprehensive School. Then, she went to Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College in Darlington. Later, she studied chemistry at the University of Liverpool from 1976 to 1978 but she did not graduate from her studies. She decided to marry and settle with her family in Liverpool. From 1979, she worked in social care for Liverpool City Council. In 1988, she became a trade union Area Organizer for NUPE (National Union of Public Employees). She served in that position until 1992.
Political career
In the 1992 general election, she was elected for the Liverpool Broadgreen constituency and had been serving as a Member of Parliament since then. From 1992 to 1994, she worked as a member of the social security select committee. Then in 1995, she became a Labour whip.
After winning the 1997 election, she served as an assistant government whip until 1998. Then in 1998, she served as a government whip. From 1997 to 1999, she sat on the House of Commons administration select committee.
She became a junior minister in the Lord Chancellor’s Department from 1999 until 2001. After that, she became a Minister of State in the Northern Ireland Office. In 2003, she was appointed as a Privy Councillor. Then in 2004, she was transferred to the Department for Work and Pensions.
From 2007 to 2008, she served as Financial Secretary to the Treasury. Then from 2008 to 2009, she became Minister of State for Farming and Environment.
Police and Crime Commissioner
On 15 November 2012, she was elected for the post of Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner, and then again in 2016, she was re-elected for that post.
Personal life
In 1977, she married Malcolm Kennedy in Knowsley. The couple has two sons named Robert and Alan who were born in 1978 and 1983 respectively. They got divorced in 1998. Currently, she is living with her partner Peter Dowling. Her partner also worked at her office and handled research and parliamentary affairs.
